Parents

Yes, I know I said that I was going to post about pants. Hell, I bet a bunch of you thought that it was going to be posted yesterday. Well sometimes I just get busy and I can't just ignore my job and entertain you...well seeing as my boss sees me about once every couple of weeks maybe I could...but that's not the point. So yes, I have yet to post about pants (not that I hear anyone complaining about that, which makes me sad) but all the letters to pants are in the title above, plus some extras so be happy with that.

Anyway I had to write this little rant because I went across campus to grab some lunch which I ate outside, all while witnessing the most incredible thing. Now, I don't know about the rest of you but when I went off to school I didn't have my parents walking me around the place. Even when it was first grade, in a new school, in a language I didn't know...what the hell was with my parents anyway? Ah, I'm kidding, I was given a sticker for my lunchbox every day I went to school, and I was happy to get that.

So I ask, why did I see numerous college freshmen wandering around campus with their parent(s) in tow? Seriously, do these kids need to be guided by their parents every step of their lives? This really is sad. Particularly when you realize that it's a work day and both parents are there to escort their precious baby (along with the rest of the family to watch in some cases). Don't these people have fucking jobs to go to? Seriously, if I had a kid (which I never will) I'd hope that they wouldn't need me to take off one (or more) or my precious holidays to show them around campus. For fucks sake there's enough orientation crap to bore you to tears, you don't need mom and dad to do it all with you!

Ok, stay tuned for more on pants! Maybe even by the end of the day...but not likely.

When I worked for the grad program in Ed Psuch, my favorite was always when the waitlisted students' parents would call in with questions about when their kid would be notified of a placement decision. Or when students would call in and ask if their parents could sit in on the orientation sessions with them. What, are their parents also going to bug employers after an interview, and sit with their kids during the first week of their new jobs?
